Food, Health & Nutrition Systems

Food, Health & Nutrition Systems

Examining what we eat, how it affects human health and ecosystems, and how food systems are being reimagined — from alternative proteins to gut health to public nutrition policy.

Examining what we eat, how it affects human health and ecosystems, and how food systems are being reimagined — from alternative proteins to gut health to public nutrition policy.

Overview

Overview

Food systems contribute ~30% of global emissions and are linked to rising rates of diet-related disease, malnutrition, and inequality. Yet food is also deeply cultural, personal, and political. Alternative proteins promise lower emissions, but will people eat them? Gut health science is exploding, but how does it connect to food policy? And how do we build nutrition systems that are healthy for people and planet — without erasing food cultures or worsening inequity?

By the numbers:

With just 1.1°C of warming, 3.3–3.6 billion people already live in contexts highly vulnerable to climate impacts (IPCC AR6). In the next decade alone, climate change will drive an estimated 32–132 million more people into extreme poverty. Mortality from floods, droughts, and storms in highly vulnerable nations is 15 times greater than in countries with very low vulnerability. Projected flood damages could increase 2.5–3.9 times at 3°C warming compared to 1.5°C.
