Rewilding & Nature Restoration

Rewilding & Nature Restoration

Learning how ecosystems are being brought back — forests regrown, wildlife corridors restored, biodiversity protected — and what it takes financially, socially, and ecologically.

Overview

Overview

We've lost over half of the world's forests and wildlife populations in the last 50 years. Restoring nature isn't just about planting trees — it's about bringing back functional ecosystems that sequester carbon, support biodiversity, regulate water, and sustain livelihoods. But restoration is slow, expensive, and often caught between conservation goals and the needs of local communities. Who pays? Who benefits? And can restoration work at the scale and speed we need?

By the numbers:

Wildlife populations have declined by 73% on average since 1970, while the tropics lost a record 6.7 million hectares of primary rainforest in 2024 alone — nearly the size of Panama. This isn't just about nature disappearing; forests and intact ecosystems regulate water cycles, store carbon, and underpin livelihoods for millions. Yet restoration projects struggle to secure long-term funding, and only a fraction of degraded land is being actively restored. The question isn't whether to restore — it's how to do it at the speed and scale the crisis demands.
